Innovation Management, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability, M.Sc.

Program overview

In the international and interdisciplinary master's degree program in Innovation Management, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability (IMES), students will learn about all the fundamental principles of innovation management, entrepreneurship and sustainability. This includes all issues on operative, tactical and strategic levels relevant to founding new businesses or working in R&D. The curriculum encompasses relevant social, economic, and social science issues from theory and practice.

Integral part of the master program is the mandatory study abroad as it allows students to challenge themselves academically and personally by experiencing different approaches to topics from their major and making connections with staff and students from other cultures.

Graduates of the IMES program receive a double degree: the Master of Science from TU Berlin and, as a second degree, one of the following:

  • Master of Science in Business Administration from the University of Twente (Netherlands)
  • Master in Management from the Warsaw School of Economics (Poland)
  • Master in Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation from the Higher School of Economics (Russia)
  • Master in Management (Innovative Entrepreneurship) at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (Russia)
  • Master of Science in Entrepreneurship from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim (Norway)

Admission requirements

In order to apply to the IMES master’s program, you must provide proof of a first university degree in the fields of economics (this includes business administration), social sciences, engineering sciences, natural sciences or any related study program.

The IMES master’s program is taught in English. You must submit proof of language skills at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

A ranking list is created of all applicants who fulfill the admission requirements. It weighs both the final grade of your previous degree and awards points based on certain criteria. Up to 100 points are awarded according to the following criteria:

  • Courses in entrepreneurship worth at least 6 ECTS (20 points)
  • Courses in innovation management worth at least 6 ECTS (20 points)
  • Courses in mathematics worth at least 6 ECTS (20 points)
  • Courses in statistics worth at least 6 ECTS (20 points)
  • Courses in ecological and social sustainability worth at least 6 ECTS (20 points)

If you have taken these subjects as part of your bachelor’s degree, you will have an easier transition to this degree program, but they are not a formal requirement for admission.

Program structure

A total of 120 credit points must be achieved, of which at least 90 credit points must be achieved in the modules and 30 credit points in the Master’s thesis. The structure of the required credit points may differ for students taking dual degree programs; this is regulated in the conditions for the relevant dual degree agreement. The program is designed to be completed within four semesters. During the first two semesters, students complete 60 ECTS in mandatory and mandatory elective courses at TU Berlin. An internship is not a required component of the IMES master’s degree program.

Content and modules

The master’s degree program IMES consists of modules covering the three major fields inherent to the program. Some modules combine elements of each, whereas other are more specific to one area. Teaching and Learning methods often include various formats like lectures, practical tutorials, seminars, and practical projects. Team projects and presentations are common in most of the modules.

You can find a module list which offers a current overview of all the modules in TU Berlin’s module transfer system (MTS). In this module database, you have an overview of which modules are mandatory for your degree program and which are elective. Detailed module descriptions provide information about the content, learning objectives, participation requirements, workload, type of assessment, and much more.

The module list is based on the study and exam regulations.

Internships

An internship is not a required component of the IMES master’s degree program.

Stays abroad

A study abroad is mandatory and takes place starting in the third semester after completing 60 ECTS at TU Berlin. Following the double degree track and deciding to study abroad at a partner University has several benefits. Besides enjoying a first-class education from reputable European schools and shared study experience among cohort classmates, the existing relationships at the partner universities facilitate quick integration into the university structures and social groups, enabling students to focus on their studies and cultural immersion. More information about our current IMES partner Universities can be found here.

Students opting for the M.Sc. IMES single degree track at TU Berlin, create and organize a study abroad plan themselves in agreement with staff of Faculty VII.
